POMO TOOL AND FOODS EATEN

ACCORDING TO SAMUEL BARRETT (1965) THE POMO USED A DIGGING STICK MADE FROM MOUNTAIN MAHOGANY ABOUT A METER LONG AND 2 CM THICK. THE BOTTOM WAS SHARPENED FOR DIGGING ROOTS AND TUBERS. IT WAS MAINLY USED BY WOMEN.

THESE FOODS PROVIDED THE POMO OF A SUPERABUNDANCE OF FOOD. MANY OF THE ROOTS WERE EATEN RAW WHILE OTHERS WERE COOKED IN ASHES AND COALS OF THE FIRE, AND SEPARATED FROM THE ASHES

AS A GENERAL UTILITY IMPLEMENT, THE DIGGING STICK WAS USED TO DIG TUBERS, ROOTS, BULBS, AND CORMS AND THEY WERE PLENTIFUL.
