I RERECORDED SEARS POINT SITE ON THE GILA RIVER AND NOMINATED IT TO THE NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES IN THE 80'S. THIS ENTIRE SITE WAS A PREHISTORIC CEREMONIAL SITE THAT WAS USED BY THE YUMANS, HOHOKAM, AND OTHER TRIBES FOR OBSERVING THE CELESTIAL CONSTELLATIONS AND HAVING VISION QUESTS, DANCING, AND LONG DISTANCE TRADING. THERE ARE SHRINES, BASALT BLUFFS COVERED WITH PETROGLYPHS, AND GEOGLPHS AS WELL AS INTAGLIOS - AREAS OF THE PATINATED DESERT THAT ARE SCRAPED CLEAN OF THE BLACK GRAVEL THAT INDICATED THE ALIGNMENT OF CERTAIN PETROGLPHS WITH THE WINTER AND SUMMER SOLSTICES.
MANY IF US FROM BLM STAYED HER AND WOKE UP AT 5 AQM TO WATCH WHAT HAPPENED HERE DURING THE SUMMER SOLSTICE ONE YEAR. THERE IS A PETROGLYPH CALLED EARTH MAGICIAN AND AS THE SUN RISES IN THE MORNING IT SHOOTS THROUGH THE CREVICE OF TWO DISTANT MOUNTAINS AND THEIR IS A BRIGHT LIGHT THAT SHOOTS UP TO THE SKY. THE POINT WHERE THE SUN RISES MATCHS A LINEAR INTAGLIO WHICH LINES UP TO THE EARTH MAGICIAN GLYPH. A SCIENTIST FROM NASA TOOK A MOVIE OF THIS AS WELL AS OTHER CONNECTIONS OF THE GLYPHS WITH SOLAR EVENTS. HE HAS MADE A DOCUMENTARY OF THESE MOVIES. IT IS INDEED A RARE SITE. APPARENTLY IT IS STILL BEING USED BY YUMANS FOR VISIONARY PURPOSES, AS IDENTIFIED BY INTERVIEWING SOME NATIVES. IT IS A VERY HOT SITE WITH FEW TREES (ONLY MESQUITE AND PALO VERDE). THERE ARE SOME DESERT WELLS LOCATED AROUND THE AREA.
THE MUSEUM OF MAN'S KEN HEDGES ALSO GOT INVOLVED BECAUSE OF THE IMMENSE AREAS OF PETROGLPHS, A PREHISTORIC CORRIDOR OF STONES LINED UP TO A SIGNIFICANT BLUFF; A DANCE FLORE OF SELECTED BLACK PEBBLES ABOUT 15 X 15 FEET IN DIAMETER, SOME SHRINES, AND ONLY A FEW POSSIBLE TEMPORARY CAMPSITES. THEIR OBSIDIAN AND CHERT FLAKES/DEBITAGE THROUGHOUT MUCH OF THE SITE AND ALONG THE TRAILS.
AN UNUSUAL PETROGLYPH THAT IS A SNAKE SYMBOL IS LIKE A MEDICAL CADUCEUS. IT IS LOCATED AT THE NORTHERNMOST BLUFF WHERE THERE IS A CAVE OF RATTLESNAKES. ONE SCIENTIST NOTED THAT THERE IS A MAGNETIC ATTRACTION AT THIS POINT AS WELL (?).
