MY FAMILY'S TRAILER CAMPING EXPERIENCE

OUR FAMILY USED TO LIKE TO HAVE A 10 X 10 FOOT TRAILER THAT WE TOOK WITH OUR CAR TO THE OHIO LAKES AND OLD MAN'S CAVE IN SOUTHERN OHIO. THIS WAS A FAMILIAR PLACE TO ALL FOUR OF US. WE LOVED CAMPING AND MY BROTHER AND I ENJOYED THE SMALL TRAILER. I SLEPT UP IN THE UPPER LOFT. THE TRAILER HAD A SMALL STOVE AND A REFRIGERATOR. THE WEIRD THING WAS THAT IT HAD A STEP DOWN AREA AS YOU ENTERED IT. WE ENJOYED CLIMBING AROUND THE OLD MAN'S CAVE AND IT WAS ONE OF OHIO'S LARGEST OPEN CAVE. WE FREQUENTLY WENT SWIMMING AT THE LAKE AS WE GREW UP.

DURING THE SUMMER OUR FAMILY WOULD TRAVEL TO VARIOUS OUTDOOR STATE PARKS AND ONE OR TWO SUMMERS WE WENT OUT WEST WITH THE TRAILER. ONE SUMMER WE TRAVELED TO COLORADO AND MY DAD TRIED TO PULL THE TRAILER UP PIKE'S PEAK. ABOUT HALF WAY UP HE DECIDED TO PULL OFF THE ROAD AND TURN AROUND. WE JUST KEPT THE TRAILER AT THE ENTRANCE AND HIKED AROUND THE GARDEN OF THE GODS. THE SANDSTONE CLIFFS AND CIRCULAR ROCKS WERE SO BEAUTIFUL. WE ENJOYED DOING A LITTLE BIT OF HIKING AND I THINK WE STAYED IN A TRAILER PARK THERE.

ONE SUMMER WE TRAVELED WITH OUR TRAILER TO MESA VERDE TO VIEW THIS WONDERFUL NATION PARK. THE PARK HAS A NUMBER OF AREAS WHERE YOU CAN HIKE INTO THE CLIFF SIDE DWELLINGS OF SANDSTONE AND IN THE KIVAS. ARCHAEOLOGISTS HAVE IDENTIFIED THAT THERE WERE 24 TRIBES THAT LIVED WITHIN THE NATIONAL PARK FROM 500 AD TO 1300 AD. THE SANDSTONE BUILDINGS WERE BUILT IN 1200 AD AND THE ANCESTRAL PUEBLOAN PEOPLE LIVED IN THESE HOUSES FOR ABOUT 100 YEARS. THE TRIBES INCLUDED ANASAZI, UTE, HOPI, AND NAVAJO, ETC. THERE ARE ABOUT 4000 SITES IN THIS PARK! FOR WHATEVER REASON - POSSIBLY INVADERS ATTACKED THEM OR LACK OF WATER- THEY MOVED SOUTH. THEIR MAIN CULTIVATED CROP WAS CORN. THEY KNEW ABOUT AND ATE ALL KINDS OF NATIVE PLANTS.

THIS EXPERIENCE LED ME INTO THE DISCIPLINE OF ARCHAEOLOGY AS I ENJOYED LEARNING ABOUT HOW PREHISTORIC PEOPLE SUSTAINED THEMSELVES FOR SO MANY MILLENIA WITHOUT GROCERY STORES AND IN DESERTS. I DECIDED AT THAT POINT THAT I WANTED TO GROW UP TO BE AN ARCHAEOLOGIST AND BE SCHOOLED IN THE WEST.

OUR FAMILY TOOK MANY MOVIES OF OUR TRAVELS WHEREVER WE WENT, AND I HAVE GROWN UP TO BE A PHOTOGRAPHER AS WELL.
