THIS FORT WAS THE SOUTHERNMOST SETTLEMENT OF THE RUSSIANS. IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE AN AGRICULTURAL BASE FOR ALASKA BUT IT FAILED - THE SOIL JUST WASN'T THE BEST. THE RUSSIANS WERE HERE FROM 1812 TO 1840, ABOUT 30 YEARS. MANY SCHOOLS STAY OVERNIGHT HERE AND THEY REENACT THE RUSSIAN PEOPLE DURING A LIVING HISTORY EVENT. ARCHAEOLOGISTS HAVE BEEN STUDYING THIS SETTLEMENT FOR WELL OVER 10 YEARS. THERE IS A CEMETERY IT WAS THE FIRST PLACE IN CALIFORNIA TO BUILD SHIPS. IT BECAME A MULTI-CULTURAL VILLAGE OF RUSSIANS, NATIVE ALASKANS, CALIFORNIAN PIONEERS, AND CREOLES - MIXED RUSSIANS AND NATIVE AMERICANS (KASHIA POMOS).
OUR FAMILY HAS BEEN THERE MANY TIMES AND IT HAS MANY TYPES OF WEATHER FROM HOT TO WINDY AND COLD (ALL IN ONE DAY). IT IS A FUN PLACE TO LOOK AT AS YOU CAN SEE THE BEDS AND ARTIFACTS THAT THEY USED IN THE 1830'S. WE HAVE BEEN THERE WHEN THEY HAD REENACTED THE WEAVERS, THE MAKING OF TOOLS WITH A BLACKSMITH, AND FIRING OFF CANONS!
THEIR IS A SMALL RUSSIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH THAT WE WENT TO ONCE. THE LANGUAGE IS VERY DIFFICULT. THE BEACH IS FUN TO EXPLORE. THEY HAVE A LARGE MUSEUM THAT SHOWS HOW THEY BROUGHT GOODS AND PEOPLE FROM THE SHIPS TO THE SHORE. IT WAS A SET UP LIKE A LARGE CABLE AND PULLEY AND THE PEOPLE RODE ON A SMALL CHAIR TO GET TO THE FORT. THE MUSEUM ALSO SHOWS WHAT THEY WORE AND THE PURPOSE OF THIS SETTLEMENT. IT DESCRIBES THE WAY PEOPLE BUILT THE FORT - IT HAS BEEN RENOVATED. IT WAS BUILT OF REDWOODS MOSTLY WITH A LARGE REDWOOD PROTECTIVE FENCE AROUND IT.
