POMOS WERE THE PRIMARY MAKERS OF MONEY IN CENTRAL CALIFORNIA. THEY USED THE WASHINGTON CLAM SHELL THAT WAS TRADED TO THEM FROM THE COAST MIWOK. SOME WERE FROM SHELTER COVE. THE SHELLS WERE BROKEN UP INTO SMALL PIECES AND ROUNDED ON SANDSTONE. THEIR VALUE VARIED ACCORDING TO THE DIAMETER OF THE DISKS. OLD STRINGS WERE HIGHLY PRIZED.
ACCORDING TO YUKI STATEMENTS THE SHELLS REACHED THE NORTHERN POMO TRIBES. ANOTHER SOURCE OF MONEY WAS HIGHLY PRIZED AND IT INCLUDED BEADS MADE OF MAGNESITE (CYLINDRICAL) FROM CACHE CREEK. THEY HAD RED, GRAY, SALMON, BUFF AND BANDED COLRS.
INDIANS CALLED THIS THEIR GOLD. SOMETIMES THEY USED THEM WITH OTHER BEADS ON NECKLACES.
