WHEN OUR FAMILY VISITED TO HAWAII WE STAYED AT MANY BED AND BREAKFAST PLACES AND WENT TO MANY PETROGLYPH SITES. WE HAVE TRAVELLED THERE AT LEAST SIX TIMES. SOME WERE VERY INTERESTING ON THE BIG ISLAND AT VOLCANO NATIONAL PARK. THEY HAD PATINATED GEOGLYPHS AND STICK - LIKE FIGURES THAT WERE SCATTERED ON THE CLIFF EDGE WHERE THEY HAD BUILT A WOODEN TRAIL OVER THE LAVA. THE PETROGLYPHS INCLUDED SOME CUPULES WHERE THE HAWIIAN MOMS USED TO PUT THEIR BABIES UMBILICAL CORD IN - FOR GOOD LUCK??
WE HIKED INTO A LARGE CRATER WHICH WAS MADE SEVERAL HUNDRED YEARS AGO BY A METEORITE HITTING THE ISLAND!
THIS PARK IS VERY HOT TO WALK IN (NO TREES) AND HAS SULPHER SMELLS FROM THE SUBTERRANEAN FISSURES. WE COULD ONLY GET SO CLOSE TO THE LAVA TUBES SINCE THE AIR AND STEAM WERE SO HOT! WE COULD SEE THE HELICOPTERS TOURING THE HOT LAVA AS IT POURED INTO THE OCEAN. THAT WOULD BE IDEAL TO VIEW THAT.
WE ALSO TOURED THE KAHOLA COAST WHERE THERE ARE MANY LARGE RESORTS. THEY EVEN HAVE SOME PETROGLYPHS BY A LARGE RESORT WHERE YOU CAN WALK ON THE PATINATED LAVA. I HAVE NO IDEA HOW OLD THESE ARE EITHER. YOU CAN TAKE A TOUR OF THIS LARGE RESORT BY BOAT!! (WHICH WE DID).
AT LAPAKAHI STATE PARK WE SNORKELED UNDER THE CORAL REEF AND THE FISH ARE SO BEAUTIFUL; AN OCTOPUS WAS ALSO ON THE CORAL. WE ALSO SAW THE PREHISTORIC EVIDENCE OF THEIR FISHING VILLAGE. THEY HAD TRAIL SIGNS WHERE THE NATIVES GATHERED SALT; A BIG GAME AREA ON THE SAND; AND SOME NEAT PETROGLYPHS THERE AS WELL. WE REALLY ENJOYED THE CALMNESS OF THIS PARK AS WE WERE THE ONLY ONES THERE!
