HEALTH FOOD COOP IN TEMPE, ARIZONA

AS GRADUATE STUDENTS IN THE 1980'S WE USED TO WORK OCCASIONALLY AT THE LOCAL HEALTH FOOD COOP IN ORDER TO GET GOOD PRICES ON ORGANIC FOODS. WE ALSO DONATED SOME OF THE FRUIT FROM OUR TREES WHERE WE LIVED THERE - LEMONS AND PECANS. IT WAS LOCATED JUST WEST OF CAMPUS AND WE RODE OUR BIKES ALL OVER TEMPE. EVERYONE RODE THEIR BIKES MOSTLY VS. DRIVING BACK THEN. EVEN WHEN WE MOVED TO PHOENIX I USED TO RIDE MY BIKE AND IT WAS A DANGEROUS TRAFFIC SITUATION IN THE 80'S.

WE MET OTHER FOLKS WHO LIKED TO EAT HEALTHY FOODS AND OF COURSE WE STUDIED THE FOODS THAT THE PREHISTORIC INDIANS USED TO EAT THROUGHOUT THIS COUNTRY AS WELL AS MEXICO. IT MADE SENSE TO EAT HEALTHY FOOD AS I GREW UP IN A FAMILY THAT WAS CONCERNED ABOUT HEALTH AND NUTRITION. I LEARNED ABOUT NUTRITION BY READING MY BOOKS AND BY READING BOOKS MY MOM HAD IN OUR HOUSE. AFTER MY TWENTIES I GREW ORGANIC VEGETABLES IN MY GARDENS AND KNEW THEY TASTED BETTER AND ARE BETTER FOR YOU THAN MASS GROWN VEGETABLES.

IN PHOENIX THEY HAD MANY DIFFERENT ETHNIC FOODS THAN THEY HAD IN OHIO. MEXICAN FOOD OF COURSE WAS A SPECIALTY. AND THEY HAD ETHNIC MARKETS THAT THEY DID NOT HAVE IN OHIO. SO I TASTED A LOT OF VARIETY OF EASTERN INDIAN AND I BECAME A VERY GOOD COOK AS WELL. I HAD SOME TIME TO DEVELOP AND MAKE OUR OWN DINNERS. WE USED THE FRESHEST INGREDIENTS POSSIBLE.
