ALBUERQUEQUE PETROGLYPH NATIONAL MONUMENT

IN THE 1990'S OUR FAMILY VISITED THIS HUGE BASALT PETROGLYPH SITE LOCATED ON THE OUTSKIRTS OF ALBUQUERQUE. I GUESS IN THE WINTER THERE MUST BE WATER IN SOME OF THE DRAINAGES. HOWEVER WE VISITED IT IN THE HOT SUMMER AND THERE WAS NO WATER AROUND.

THERE ARE MANY OTHER DRAINAGES IN THIS HUGE NATIONAL MONUMENT WHICH WE DID NOT HAVE TIME TO VISIT. THE VISITOR CENTER WAS ONCE HOME TO DR. SOPHIE ABERLE WHO STUDIED AND WORKED WITH THE NATIVE AMERICANS IN THIS AREA. SHE WAS INTERESTED IN THE
WOMEN'S LIVES, THEIR CHILDBIRTH, BABY CARE, DIETS, AND HEALING.

THERE ARE PETROGLYPHS OF HANDS, ANIMALS, PEOPLE, CATS, SNAKES, DEER, COYOTE, CROSSES, GEOGLYPHS AND MORE COMPLEX GLYPHS. WE SPENT SEVERAL HOURS TOURING THE GLYPHS AND CLIMBING THE HILLS, LOOKING AT THE VISITOR CENTER. THE ONE UNUSUAL GLYPH WAS A CAT WHICH MY SON LIKED. WE TOOK MANY PHOTOS. THERE WERE FEW PEOPLE TOURING THIS SITE AT THIS TIME. I'D RECOMMEND GOING THERE IF YOU LIKE TO VIEW SOME UNUSUAL PETROGLYPHS AS IT IS VERY ACCESSIBLE BY CAR.
