BLM HARQUAHALA OBSERVATORY

I HELPED TO WRITE A PROPOSAL TO RECONSTRUCT THIS OBSERVATORY WHEN I WORKED AT BLM. WE SELECTED COMPANY TO RENEW SOME OF THE WOOD AND I COLLECTED SOME OF THE ORIGINAL PHOTOS FROM THE BASEMENT. IT HAD BEEN NOMINATED TO THE NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES. THIS OBSERVATORY WAS BUILT IN THE 1920'S ATOP THE TALLEST MOUNTAIN IN SOUTHWESTERN ARIZONA (5600'). ON THE WAY UP THIS STEEP JEEP TRAIL THERE ARE SOME PREHISTORIC SITES THAT I RECORDED. I HELPED USE SOME OF THE PHOTOS TO MAKE A DISPLAY OF THIS OBSERVATORY OPERATED BY THE SMITHSONIAN IN THE PHOENIX STATE CAPITAL BUILDING.

IT IS A VERY RUGGED MOUNTAIN ROAD WHICH WAS BUILT BY THE OBSERVATORY CREW- THEY APPARENTLY LIVED HERE AWHILE. THERE IS A FANTASTIC VIEW OF THE SURROUNDING COUNTRY SIDE. IT ALSO HAS BEEN PARTIALLY SURVEYED BY ASU FOR PREHISTORIC SITES. THEIR ARE MANY AS THE MOUNTAIN HAS SOME DRAINAGES AND COOL SPOTS.
