MY VISIT TO ZUNI PUEBLO

WHILE I WAS IN GRADUATE SCHOOL AT ASU IN PHOENIX, MY BEST GIRLFRIEND EVENTUALLY GRADUATED FROM ASU AND SHE AND HER HUSBAND MOVED TO ZUNI IN NEW MEXICO WHERE SHE HAD A LITTLE BOY. WE HAD BEEN THEIR WITNESSES TO THEIR MARRIAGE ON THE PAPAGO RESERVATION. THE TRIBE HAS A WONDERFUL ASSORTMENT OF CEREMONIES INCLUDING SHAKALO. THIS IS A CEREMONY WHERE THERE IS A TALL FIGURE WHO ROAMS THE VILLAGE AND APPEARS AFTER THE VILLAGE HELPS TO BUILD A HOUSE FOR ONE FAMILY. PEOPLE GO FROM HOUSE TO HOUSE TO ENJOY FRIENDSHIP AND FOOD THROUGHOUT THE NIGHT.

ZUNI CAN HAVE TORENTIAL RAINSTORMS DURING THE SUMMER AND IT GETS SO VERY MUDDY IN THEIR CLAY, IT ALL SEEMS TO BE LIKE A RED EARTH SLIME. WE HAVE TRAVELED TO MOST ALL OF THEIR SHOPS AND FOUND THEIR JEWELRY TO BE BEAUTIFUL, AS WELL AS THEIR FETISHES OF DIFFERENT STONES. THE ARTISANS ARE FUN TO MEET AND CHAT WITH.

MY GIRLFRIEND LED US TO A SPECIAL MESA TOP WHERE YOU HAVE TO CLIMB A STEEP ROPE LADDER TO GET TO THE TOP. AT THE TOP IS A VISION QUEST AREA - STONES PLACES IN AN ELLIPTICAL CIRCLE WHERE A PERSON FASTS AND GAINS POWER FROM THE CREATOR TO HELP THEM BE HEALTHY. THIS VISION QUEST WAS POSSIBLY ALSO USED BY THE SHAMANS OF THE TRIBE. ON THE WAY DOWN FROM THIS MESA YOU CAN VIEW A LARGE PANEL OF HUGE HUMAN FIGURES AND GEOGLYPHS.
