CLEAR LAKE STATE PARK

THIS LAKE IS IN THE SOUTHEAST POMO AREA WHERE THEY HAD A NUMBER OF PREHISTORIC VILLAGES. THERE HAVE BEEN PETROGLYPHS AND A PICTOGRAPH FOUND THERE. IT HAS A CLEAR VIEW OF MT. KONOCI, A SPIRITUAL MTN. THAT THESE FOLKS DID NOT DARE CLIMB. IT HAS A PARTICULAR TYPE OF OBSIDIAN THAT THEY USED AND TRADED. CLEAR LAKE IS CALIFORNIA'S OLDEST NATURAL LAKE. THE POMO USED A SULPHER NATURAL SPRING IN THE NORTHERN PART OF THE LAKE FOR SWEATS AND HEALING. THE SMELL OF THE SULPHER IS LIKE THE HOT SPRINGS IN CALISTOGA. IF THE SHAMANS COULD NOT HEAL THEIR FOLKS IN THEIR VILLAGES THEY WOULD CARRY THEM TO CALISTOGA'S HEALING SPRINGS.

APPARENTLY CLEAR LAKE HAS SOME GOOD FISHING AS MANY BOATS USE THE AREA.

RATTLESNAKE ISLAND IS IN CLEAR LAKE AND WAS WHERE THERE WERE SOME PREHISTORIC SITES. THE SOUTHEASTERN POMO ARE PROFESSIONAL DANCERS WHO TRAVEL THE POWOW CIRCLES TO MAKE MONEY. THEY ARE THE FEW NATIVE POMO WHO KNOW SOME OF THEIR INDIGENOUS LANGUAGE. DANCING HEALS PEOPLE'S SPIRITS.
