MY TRIP TO CUAUTLA MEXICO AT 18

AFTER MY FIRST YEAR IN COLLEGE IN OHIO I DECIDED TO GO TO MEXICO ENCOURAGED BY SOME FRIENDS I HAD MET IN COLLEGE. I TRAVELED BY GREYHOUND BUS TO NOGALES TEXAS AND AT THAT POINT THEY HAD LOST MY DUFFLE BAG OF CLOTHES. NEVERTHELESS I HAD MY BACKPACK AND I WENT TO MY FIELD SCHOOL ABOUT 1 DAY LATE. THERE WERE ABOUT 30 AMERICANS AND MANY OF US DID NOT KNOW SPANISH. WE LIVED A FEW MILES FROM THESITE WE EXCAVATED AND IT WAS QUITE THE SITE. THEY WERE BUILDING A RESORT THERE SO WE WERE DOING SOME TEST ERXCAVATION AT SEVERAL PYRAMIDS. I REMEMBER FINDING SOME INCREDIBLE OBSIDIAN BLADES AND MANY CERAMICSWHICH WERE WASHED BY THE MEXICANS.

THEY PROVIDED LUNCH FOR US AT THIS SITE. MANY CHILDREN CARRYING THEIR BABY SISTERS CAME BY TO SEE WHAT WE WERE DOING. THE SITE WAS QUITE LARGE AND WE HAD TO SURVEY AN AREA BEFORE WE EXCAVATED THE AREA. I HAD NEVER EXCAVATED A PYRAMID SITE BEFORE.

I MET SEVERAL OLDER LADIES WHO CAME FROM NEW YORK AND WE TRAVELED THROUGHOUT THE VARIOUS SMALL TOWNS DURING THE WEEKENDS TO SEE MARKETS AND ARCHAEOLOGICAL RUINS. IT WAS FACINATING TO VIEW A DIFFERENT THIRD WORLD COUNTRY. WE WERE INVITED TO SEVERAL MEALS IN SOME SMALL VILLAGES WHERE THEY ONLY HAD THE RIVERS TO BATH IN.

A TRIP I MADE TO AN OLD MOUNTAINTOP VILLAGE WAS FUN SINCE THEY HAD A SUNDAY MARKET. ONE LADY WAS SELLING ALL KINDS OF MEDICINALS INCLUDING CHICKEN FEET AND HERBS GROWN LOCALLY.

I ALSO WENT TO THE LARGE ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE THAT WAS BESIDE THE SCHOOL OF THE AMERICAS TO LOOK AT WHAT HOUSE TYPES WERE THERE AND IT WAS BUILT UNDER A CATHOLIC CHURCH.
