BASKET MAKING AND THEIR SPIRITUALITY

THEY MADE BASKETS THAT HAD A DAU IN THEM OR AN IMPERFECTION. THE WOMEN WERE TAUGHT THIS CRAFT FROM WHEN THEY WERE ABOUT 4 YEARS OLD. THEY USED WILLOWS, SEDGEROOT, AND REDBUD ROOTS TO WEAVE ATTRACTIVE BASKETS. THEY TRADED WITH THE SOUTHEAST POMO TO GET THEIR REDBUD. THEY USED COILING AND TWINING TECHNIQUES TO WEAVE BASKETS FOR BABIES, UTENSILS, AND FOR WEDDING DOWRIES, AS WELL AS FOR COLLECTING SEEDS AND FOR MAKING ACORN SOUP.

A SHAMAN'S DREAM
A SHAMAN'S PASSION IS DREAMING. WHEN A SHAMAN DREAMS HE OR SHE HAS A DREAM ABOUT THEIR FUTURE AND WHAT THEY WILL BE DOING WITH THEIR LIVES. THEY CONSTANTLY HAVE VISIONS ABOUT THEIR YEARNINGS AND WHAT THEY WILL ACHIEVE, AND WHO THEY WILL HAVE ON THEIR TEAM OF PLAYERS. HIKE AROUND FITCH MOUNTAIN
TODAY I HIKED AROUND FITCH MOUNTAIN IN THE AFTERNOON AND IT WAS A LONG 6 MILE HIKE. I STOPPED AT THE VILLA CHANTICLER TO EAT A LITTLE. I MET A MAN WHO WAS AN ATHLETE AND HE HAD CLIMBED UP TO THE TOP OF THE MOUNTAIN AND CAME DOWNHILL SINGING. IT WAS A GOOD VIEW AND I SAW A FEW CANOEISTS ON THE RUSSIAN RIVER. ONE HOUSE HAD A HAWAIIAN NAME ON THE OUTSIDE AND WAS PROBABLY OCCUPIED BY A HAWAIIAN FAMILY. I ALSO SAW SOME SQUIRRELS, JUNCOS, AND CORMORANTS AND HAWKS. THE RIVER WAS QUITE MUDDY AND FAST FLOWING.
THERE WERE FEW PEOPLE HIKING AROUND THE MOUNTAIN THIS WEEKEND. I'M NOT SURE WHY BECAUSE IT WAS A VERY NICE DAY AND IT WAS ABOUT 65 DEGREES.

Restoration of Foss Creek
YESTERDAY I HELPED THE RUSSIAN RIVER WATERSHED PEOPLE CLEAN UP THE FOSS CREEK JUST BY NORTH STREET IN TOWN. WE HAD HEAVY BOOTS AND WE HAD HEAVY GLOVES TO PROTECT US FROM THE THORNS OF INVASIVE BLACKBERRIES. THERE WERE ABOUT 7 PEOPLE - SOME OF US DUG UP THE INVASIVE UNDERBRUSH AND SOME OF US DUG UP THE FENNEL. THERE WERE MEN WHO BROKE UP ROCKS AND MOVED THEM TO THE CITY DUMP. WE TRIED TO TAKE CARE OF THE POISON OAK - THEY USED A CHEMICAL ON THE LEAVES.
WE ONLY WORKED ON ABOUT 1/2 OF AN ACRE - AND IT WAS STRENUOUS WORK. THERE WAS CONSTRUCTION GOING ON ACROSS THE CREEK AND IT WAS A HOT DAY! THIS GROUP DOES THIS EVERY TWO WEEKS IF YOU WANT TO JOIN THEM!

THE GIRL WHO MARRIED RATTLESNAKE
EVERYTHING IN THE WORLD WAS ALIVE AND GAVE COMMONALITY TO ALL THINGS. EVERYTHING WAS KIN TO EACH OTHER AND THE RATTLESNAKE WAS CONSIDERED A BROTHER IN THIS MYTH.
THERE IS A ROCK WITH A HOLE IN IT AT A PLACE CALLED COBOWIN WHICH HAD MANY RATTLESNAKES. IN ONE OF THESE LARGE HOUSES WAS A GIRL AND SHE WENT OUT TO GATHER CLOVER WHILE A RATTLESNAKE WATCHED HER. SHE TOOK THE CLOVER HOME TO GIVE IT TO HER MOTHER.
WHEN RATTLESNAKE APPEARED AT THE VILLAGE HE TURNED INTO A YOUNG MAN. HE WENT TO THE YOUNG GIRL;S HOUSE AND SAID HE WANTED TO MARRY HER AND REMAINED THERE WITH HER FAMILY. THEN HE WENT HOME AND DID THIS FOR FOUR DAYS.THE FIFTH DASY HE WENT THERE BUT DID NOT CHANGE HIS FORM. THE GIRL MADE A LIGHT AND LOOKED OVER IN THE PLACE WHERE THERE WAS A SOUND. VIRTUALLY EVERY VILLAGE IN NATIVE CALIFORNIA HAD AT LEAST ONE SWEAT HOUSE. IN THE POMO SOCIETIES THEY WERE MADE SEMI-SUBTERRANEAN AND HAD LARGE WILLOW POLES AS POSTS. THEY WERE COVERED WITH TULES AND GRASS THATCHING. THESE WERE LARGELY USED BY THE MEN FOR SWEATING AND MAKING CAMARADERIE AS WELL AS HAVING ENJOYABLE EVENTS. THE WOMEN SERVED THE MEN FOOD INSIDE THE SWEAT LODGES AND SOMETIMES WERE ALLOWED TO ENTER IT. GUESTS FROM OTHER VILLAGES WERE ALLOWED TO ENTER THE SWEAT LODGE.
THERE WAS A FIRE BUILT IN THE CENTER AND THE LODGE HAD A SMOKE HOLE IN THE ROOF. THE YUROK BUILT THEIR SWEAT LODGES OUT OF REDWOOD PLANKS AND CAN STILL BE SEEN AT PRAIRIE CREEK REDWOODS STATE PARK. ON EASTER SUNDAY I WENT TO THE EPISCOPAL CHURCH IN TOWN AND IT WAS CROWDED. THEY HAD MANY CALLA LILIES AND LEAVES ALL THROUGHOUT THE CHURCH. AS THE MINISTER AND CAROLERS CAME UP TO THE ALTER THEY BROUGHT IN A LOT OF INCENSE. IT IS A SMALL CHURCH AND EVERYONE WAS GIVEN MANY SONGS IN THEIR BROCHURE. CHURCH LASTED ABOUT 1 1/2HOURS. THE MINISTER WAS READING SOME BIBLE STORIES AND THEY HAD THE CONGREGATION RESPOND TO THEM.

THE UNINTERRUPTED TAPPING METHODS CALMS AND SLOWS PERSISTENT PAIN IMPULSES. IF THE PAIN PERSISTS YOU CAN TAP ON THE SAME AREA ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE BODY.

ANNIE OAKLEY'S WILD WEST ATTRACTION
ANNIE AND HER HUSBAND FRANK BUTLER LEFT BUFFRALO BILL'S SHOW IN 1887. THEY TRAVELED ON A TOUR OF EUROPE INCLUDING LONDON. THEY RETURNED TO THE WILD BILL SHOW IN 1889 AND LEFT IN 1991. 1N 1886 THE WILD WEST WENT TO STATEN ISLAND TO PERFORM FOR THE SUMMER. ANNIE WAS CONSIDERED VERY CONSERVATIVE COMPARED TO CALAMITY JANE WHO DROVE THE DEADWOOD COACH IN SHOW PROGRAMS. SHE DESIGNED HER OWN COSTUMES AND DID HER OWN NEEDLEPOINT ON HER DRESSES. THE JOURNALISTS TO WHOM SHE SERVED TEA SHE WAS KNOWN AS LADYLIKE AND QUIET, AS WELL AS AN AVID BICYCLIST.
