COYOTE

IN PREHISTORIC TIMES COYOTE WAS KNOWN AS A TRICKSTER. HE WAS ALSO KNOWN AS THE MAKER OF HUMANS IN THE POMO TRIBE. HE CREATED 2 WOODEN STAFFS AND PLANTED THEM INTO THE GROUND. HE MAY HAVE DREAAMED HUMANS INTO EXISTENCE. HE WAS NOT ONE OF THE ANIMALS THAT PEOPLE ATE BECAUSE OF THIS. HE COULD CAUSE DISEASE OR UNHAPPINESS, AND HE COULD HAVE MAGICAL POWERS BESTOWED UPON THE TRIBE. HE IS FAMOUS FOR PLAYING TRICKS ON MANY PEOPLE THROUGHOUT THE WESTERN TRIBES, AS WELL AS THROUGHOUT THE WORLD. HE WAS KNOWN AS THE FOOLISH ONE, THE RABBIT, SWEET-MEDICINE, HARE, WAKDJUNKAGA, OR RAVEN.

HE STOLE SALMON AND DEER MEAT FROM THE VILLAGES.IN A MIWOK TALE HE IS AN ANCIENT FIGURE OF GOOD AND EVIL, THE WISE AND THE FOOLISH, JOYFUL AND TRAJIC COMBINED IN A COMPLEX AND CREATIVE ANIMAL.
