SMUDGING

NATIVES FROM AROUND THE WORLD USED INCENSE AS A WAY TO RELEASE THE NEGATIVITY OF A HOUSE OR A CHURCH OR ANY OTHER BUILDING. IT IS COMMONLY USED BY CATHOLICS, EPISCOPALEANS, AND GREEKS AS WELL AS NATIVE AMERICAN CHURCHES.

THE NORTH AMERICAN INDIANS USED SMUDGING BEFORE ALL OF THEIR RITUALS TO SUMMON THE SPIRITS. THERE RITUALS INCLUDE SMUDGING IN CIRCLES:

THE SOUTH REPRESENTS COYOTE - A TRICKSTER AND CREATOR
THE WEST REPRESENTS THE BEAR - A DREAMER AND EMITS STRENGTH
THE NORTH REPRESENTS THE BUFFALO - THIS GROUNDS AND PROTECTS KNOWLEGE
THE EAST REPRESENTS THE EAGLE - IT INSPIRES AND CLARIFIES YOU

THE POMO NATIVES USED DRIED BAY LEAVES AS WELL AS SAGE AND INCENSE CEDAR TO SMUDGE THEIR MEMBERS DURING CEREMONIES.
