A GOOD LIFE TO LOOK FORWARD TO

BECAUSE OF THE EFFORTS OF TRIBAL SCHOLARS AND THE PERSISTENCE OF AND TEACHING OF ELDERS, MANY AMONG THE GENERATION OF INDIANS ARE DEDICATING THEMSELVES TO RELEARNING AND PRACTICING THE OLD WAYS. ROCHELLE, A YOUNG MOTHER OF THREE, HAS A VISION OF MAKING BASKETRY IN THE FUTURE. WHILE OTHER AMERICANS MAY DREAM OF MODERN CONVENIENCES, ROCHELLE SEES HER PAST AS HER FUTURE AND WANTS TO CREATE ART.

SHE BELIEVES THAT HER BASKETRY IS ALIVE AND IT CONTAINS HER HEART AND SPIRIT. SHE WANTS TO TEACH THIS SKILL TO HER CHILDREN AS WELL. SHE WANTS TO BE USING MY BASKETS EVERYDAY. SHE WANTS TO BE USING THEM FOR COOKING ACORN SOUP. AND WHEN SHE IS AN ELDER SHE WANTS TO PUT HER GRANDCHILDREN IN BABY BASKETS MADE BY ME. SHE LOOKS FORWARD TO THAT.
