THE GIRL WHO MARRIED RATTLESNAKE

EVERYTHING IN THE WORLD WAS ALIVE AND GAVE COMMONALITY TO ALL THINGS. EVERYTHING WAS KIN TO EACH OTHER AND THE RATTLESNAKE WAS CONSIDERED A BROTHER IN THIS MYTH.

THERE IS A ROCK WITH A HOLE IN IT AT A PLACE CALLED COBOWIN WHICH HAD MANY RATTLESNAKES. IN ONE OF THESE LARGE HOUSES WAS A GIRL AND SHE WENT OUT TO GATHER CLOVER WHILE A RATTLESNAKE WATCHED HER. SHE TOOK THE CLOVER HOME TO GIVE IT TO HER MOTHER.

WHEN RATTLESNAKE APPEARED AT THE VILLAGE HE TURNED INTO A YOUNG MAN. HE WENT TO THE YOUNG GIRL;S HOUSE AND SAID HE WANTED TO MARRY HER AND REMAINED THERE WITH HER FAMILY. THEN HE WENT HOME AND DID THIS FOR FOUR DAYS.THE FIFTH DASY HE WENT THERE BUT DID NOT CHANGE HIS FORM. THE GIRL MADE A LIGHT AND LOOKED OVER IN THE PLACE WHERE THERE WAS A SOUND. HE SHOOK HIS HEAD AND FRIGHTENED HER TERRIBLY. SHE RAN AND DROPPED THE LIGHT.

THE NEXT MORNING RATTLESNAKE TOOK THE GIRL HOME WITH HIM AND SHE REMAINED THERE. THIS GIRL HAD FOUR CHILDREN AND THEY KNEW THEY WERE RATTLESNAKE BOYS. THEY ASKED THEIR MOTHER WHY DON'T YOU TALK AS WE DO? SHE SAID SHE WAS A HUMAN AND THE BOYS WANTED TO CRAWL OVER HER AND THEY DID.

SHE WENT BACK TO HER MOTHER'S HOUSE AND TOLD HER THAT SHE COULD NO LONGER VISIT HER. HER MOTHER WEPT AND SINCE THEN SHE HAS LIVED AT RATTLESNAKE'S HOUSE.
