THE POMO HAD A HARD LIFE DURING THE LATE 1930'S. THEY WERE FORCED TO WALK FROM THEIR RANCHERIAS TO COVELO IN ORDER TO LEAVE THEIR LANDS FOR THE PIONEERS. THEY HAD TO LEAVE THEIR RANCHERIAS AND PACK THEIR BELONGINGS IN A TRAVOIS AND THE WOMEN AND CHILDREN HAD TO WALK MANY MILES. BECAUSE THEY WERE FORCED OUT OF THEIR SPIRITUAL LAND THEY HAD MANY ISSUES AND CRIED - THUS THIS JOURNEY WAS CALLED "THE TRAIL OF TEARS". THEY ALSO DID NOT GET FED ENOUGH DURING THIS JOURNEY AND ELDERS, WOMEN, CHILDREN, AND SOME MEN DIED FOR LACK OF FOOD.
IT WAS DIFFICULT TO LEAVE THEIR HOMELANDS AND RELOCATE TO COVELO WHICH WAS WHERE MANY TRIBES WERE SENT. HISTORIC COVELO WAS A PLACE WHERE MANY TRIBES IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA MIXED. ARCHAEOLOGISTS HAVE WRITTEN THAT THE PREHISTORY OF THE AREA WAS A PLACE WHERE THERE WERE QUITE A FEW BATTLES - NOT ONLY BETWEEN THE TRIBES BUT ALSO BETWEEN THE ANGLOS AND NATIVES.
